Round 18 Champ Recap

The final round of the regular season is in the books and both Pivot City teams are now gearing up for a hopeful 3 week finals campaign. With everything to play for next Tuesday, check out below to see how both teams went in their final regular season game.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN

Our Women faced off against the young Try Boys Bears in the final round of the season, with only 5 players available, it was Coach Matthews’ gameplan to keep them on the court as long as possible.

‘With only 5 players available the main plan was to finish the game with 5 on the court.’

Jumping out to a quick 9-point lead by the end of quarter time, the team looked to build on their lead in the second half with some lockdown defence through the next 10 minutes.

‘Milly challenged the plan with 3 early fouls but beyond that the girls played clean D and were able to get the job done.’

Heading into the second half up by 16 the team outscored the Bears by 21 to break away and cruise to an easy win.

‘done Young gun VJ caught fire  in an impressive display finishing with 25 With 4 of our 5 players in double figures it was always going to be a challenge for our opposition’

The team will look to knock off undefeated Sharks in next weeks qualifying final, with two close battles already this season it looks to be a great matchup. Make sure to get down and support the team as they look to take out the 2022 title!

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN

After securing their spot in the 2022 finals, our Men looked to get a good warmup game in against top placed Wildcats before taking on rivals YMCA next week in an elimination final.

Coming out of the gate slow the team struggled on offence as the Wildcats broke away early. The final few minutes of the quarter saw the team regain some momentum from Max Kos behind the arc to bring the deficit to just 4 heading into the second.

The Second saw the team slip by 5 points as Wildcats drew a 9 point advantage, once again the scoring dried up in patches as the team struggled to get into the paint and through the Wildcats zone.

Our turnovers hurt us and our defence broke down on too many occasions to allow wildcats easy looks which led to them scoring easy baskets. On a high note we played well in patches and a few times in the game we reduced the deficit from double digits to below 5.’

Going down 71-56 the team was unable to overcome the Wildcats in what was a close game blown out in the final stages.

Coach O’Learly believes that ‘if we are to move past the first week of finals we need to play great defence for the entire game and look after the ball… YMCA will be a very tough assignment next week.’

The team will take on Y at 8:15 next Tuesday and look to advance to the second round of Elimination finals. Make sure you get down to support the team!
