We have hit the midpoint of the 2024 Winter Championship season, with our Men and Women looking to push forward towards the finish line and secure finals births.
Last time we checked in our Men were fighting for a top two spot while our Women were searching for a few more wins to add to the tally as they continue to rebuild around the clubs young up and coming talent.
Our Men have enjoyed a 3-1 record since round 7, knocking off grand final contenders CC Eagles by just 1 point in round 8, and collecting two quality wins against Lara and SG Kings.
The Men saw a tough defeat to rivals YMCA back in round 8, 84-73, after a poor night from the field was unable to be overcome despite a close 4th quarter comeback.
Currently sitting on top of the ladder, the Men are holding an 8-2 record, with the early season draw again Surfocoasters keeping them 1 point ahead of Wildcats who they will face off with tonight. A win here would be crucial to the final’s efforts, as there are currently 5 teams fighting for the top 4 spots, with just 1 game’s worth of points between 1st and 5th.
Max Kos has will be looking to go back-to-back for league MVP this year as he is putting up 26.5ppg while average a ridiculous 5.2 3pm per game which included a ridiculous 10 made threes against Sharks earlier in the season.
Backing Max up has been Marach Marach who’s putting up 18ppg, while Ethan Blythe is close behind him with 15.3ppg to round out a high-powered offence.
With half the season to play, can our Men make the push for a back-to-back title run, only time will tell.
Last time we checked in with our Women they were searching for another win to add to their column in what has been a rebuilding year for the team.
It has been a tough month for the team as they have taken 4 tough losses in a row, with significant losses to Wildcats and Sharks who sit atop the ladder, in which both games the young Pivot side struggled to stay close on either side of the ball.
The team rallied hard in round 10 against YMCA and in a close battle were just barely edged out 56-60 in a game where young Miley Dawkins continues to show promise with a game high 20 points.
While the wins have again alluded them the team put up a strong performance against Try Boys going down 61-80 with the game being close until 3 quarter time, where the Bears experience was able to carry them to a win.
With just 6 teams in the competition there is still a fighting chance that the Women crack the top 4, sitting just 1 win back from tying for a top 4 position.
